The 5 days advanced training were then followed by another 3 days of ARCHIBUS fundamental training. The training were done for the FMS deployment at one of UiTM’s newer campus in Negeri Sembilan. Our in-house trainer conducted the training on topics such as Space Management and the use of the web-based complaints management system.

Leveraging Technologies And Opportunities for Sustainable Real Estate (Property), Infrastructure and Facilities Management Seminar

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai Johor has been an ARCHIBUS user since 2004 with the initial use of the Space Management module. In 2008, UTM roll out IFAMMS which is powered by ARCHIBUS. You can check out their ‘Fact & Figures‘ to learn more about UTM facilities background information. With cooperation of Pejabat Harta Bina and CICT Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UTM students and lecturers were the main participants during the event. We hope they make the best of the information being shared.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) Mini Seminar for JKR

Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Malaysia is currently promoting the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) by organizing a mini seminar for their staff. ARCHIBUS Solution Centers Kuala Lumpur (ASC-KL) and Microcorp Technology were invited to sponsor the event and decided to bring along Bruce Forbes to present a talk about BIM in perspective of Facilities Management with ARCHIBUS.

Bruce Forbes presented an interesting topic from a Total Infrastructure and Facilities Management (TIFM) point of view since we recently featured ARCHIBUS during one of our event last July 2010.

We received overwhelming responses after the mini seminar ended and also made some new references with the other partners who participated. With the introduction of new technology, concept and method by Mr. Bruce Forbes, we hope all of our talk attendees benefited from the information being shared to improve the overall Facilities Management practice in Malaysia.

The CFMS department of Microcorp Technology consisted of key personnels who are dedicated in promoting and implementing the use of ARCHIBUS in Malaysia generally. Bruce Forbes visited our head quarters and gave a pep talk to the entire MTSB CFMS Team.

It was an honour having the ARCHIBUS President himself giving an inspiring morale bolster.

The second event was the ‘ARCHIBUS KL System Administration Training’ (3rd – 5th April 2009) attended by our internal technical team and also 2 other ARCHIBUS partners team from our neighbouring countries, namely Thailand and The Philippines. The objective of the this event is to update and enhance ARCHIBUS application knowledge and technical skills for the participant and also to unite ARCHIBUS solution partners in the South East Asia Region.

Overall, the seminar had received positive feedbacks from both our clients and the ARCHIBUS South East Asia partners who joined us.

Building Maintenance & Asset Management Expo Asia 2008 (BMAM Expo Asia 2008) serves as an annual 2-day international trade exhibition and conference platform dedicated exclusively on building maintenance and facility management across Asia which will bring together all key players in the industry under one roof. This event will also act as an educational forum for building owners, engineers and key decision makers to better understand the benefits and importance of building maintenance and facility management.

Mr Bruce K. Forbes, president of ARCHIBUS Inc. who is on his tour in South East Asia visited Kuala Lumpur and gave a thoughtful session basically about how technology can be utilized to save our environment apart from saving money and keeping the cost down.

International Facility Management Association (IFMA) defined Facility Management as:

“A profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology.”

Extracting some text-book material of Facility Management and its relation towards technology:

Facilities and physical infrastructure management is a critical business function. Comprising 25 to 50 percent of a company’s/organization’s fixed assets and operating costs, facilities are significant resources that must be efficiently managed in order for a business to succeed in a globally competitive market.

Facilities information crosses an organization’s traditional department boundaries. For example:-

• A CFO evaluating mergers requires accurate real estate portfolio information.
• A CEO generates business plan projections that drive a planner’s space forecasts.
• A space planner allocating resources must integrate data from all departments and communicate the result to architects.
• A move planner must coordinate data from the facilities, telecommunications, and maintenance departments.

Facilities information also crosses the boundaries of traditional software applications:

• CAD drawings depict a facility’s structure and areas.
• Databases store alphanumeric data about rooms, equipment, furniture, repairs, and breakdowns.
• Spreadsheets calculate areas, rent, and maintenance costs.
• Routed approvals flow through email.
• Web browsers pull casual and remote users directly into the workflow.

As such, to implement facilities management automation, you need a specialized package that understands the corporate roles and responsibilities, understands the business missions and what each role requires to achieve them, knows how to validate and flow facility information through an organization, and can integrate diverse technologies into a unified whole.

In our next series of introducing facility management solutions, we won’t bore you with even more text related material. Instead, we’ll have a lot of screenshots and probably video presentation or slide shows which we think would be more exciting!
